Volunteers shovel mulch on a trail near the ocean and hold a Detour Ahead sign found during a PBC cleanup event

As we begin to reflect on the past year, this month brings forth even stronger expressions of gratitude for each and every volunteer who supported us and our programs. You are the heartbeat of our organization. You show up and put on your gloves, offer your time and skills selflessly, and make our coastside community a better place through your collective actions. Without your tireless dedication, our programs simply wouldn’t exist. From all of at the Pacific Beach Coalition, thank you.

Rockaway Beach Cleanup

It was a beautiful, misty November morning at Rockaway Beach. We saw a lot of new faces and students from local schools, including Mills High School, Oakland Tech, St. Catherine of Siena, Northgate, and Oceana. Despite it being the day after Halloween, we didn’t find many candy wrappers.

There was plenty of other trash to pick up though. Among the typical trash finds, our volunteers collected two tennis balls, party detritus, a diesel fuel additive container, a shredded steel belted radial tire, a bag of discarded clothing, and two 17-inch Taco Bell Cantina souvenir single-use plastic drink cups, which can’t be recycled.

  • 47 volunteers
  • 55 pounds of landfill trash
  • 9 pounds of recyclables
  • 1,400 cigarettes filters

Foster City Bridgeview Park Cleanup

This month, we welcomed individual volunteers and students from South Hillsborough Elementary School, Scouts Pack 153, and various schools. We filled up six large trash bags and even found a discarded Detour Ahead sign.

  • 80 volunteers
  • 284 pounds of landfill trash
  • 5 pounds of recyclables
  • 2,100 cigarettes filters

Linda Mar Beach Cleanup

We had a “Four-Table Special” cleanup at Linda Mar! Thank you, Mother Nature, for holding off on the rain until late in the day. First to the cleanup was Joseph who flew in the night before from New Jersey for the cleanup (and for a company meeting). He helped set up our cleanup table.

We also welcomed Sam from The Marine Mammal Center who brought her expertise and materials, including a California sea lion pelt. Bill set up his steelhead trout table along with his stuffed steelhead, Stella, to educate all about our 2026 honoree.

Our site captains hosted volunteers from far and wide, including Cub Scouts 419, Pacifica 4H, YMSL, NCL, and many area high schools as well as individuals and families. Our volunteers did it again, taking dangerous trash off the beach that no one seemed to see before the cleanup, including wire, fishing line, and broken glass. Always a fantastic way to start the weekend, and such a gift to the environment.

Mussel Rock Cleanup & Habitat Restoration

We had perfect sunny weather and were joined by volunteers from 11 different high schools, the Navy Reserve, and Swinerton Builders. The day’s most unusual finds were an engine manifold and one vape cartridge.

Additionally, our habitat restoration event had at least 15 enthusiastic volunteers who helped plant natives along the edge of the bluff. Daly City Public Works provided water and some native plants.

  • 76 volunteers
  • 130 pounds of landfill trash
  • 18 pounds of recyclables
  • 1,311 cigarettes filters
  • 30 square yards mulched

Linda Mar Habitat Restoration

We had 25 volunteers, including some of our Water Warriors team, that we split into groups. One group focused on invasive plant removal from the upper area of the Linda Mar trail. Another focused on spreading mulch at various locations along the trail. The most exciting part was installing young poppy plants. The Water Warriors and other volunteers got to put them into the ground (with the help of some power tools).

  • 200 native plants installed
  • 300 pounds of green waste (weeds) removed
