June 2025 Site Reports

June 2025 was a busy month for the Pacific Beach Coalition and our dedicated volunteers. Of those volunteers, we celebrated many of our wonderful Teen Site Captain seniors who recently graduated high school and are gearing up to go to college.
In addition, we celebrated Pacifica Pride with a booth at Ingrid B. Lacy Middle School and hosted a special pelican paddle at Pillar Point Harbor on World Ocean Day with support from our friends at Half Moon Bay Kayak Company.
Check out the results from some of our June 2025 events.
Rockaway Beach Cleanup
Highlights: Despite the chilly, overcast weather, Saturday’s cleanup had a strong turnout! We welcomed 53 volunteers in total, 26 of whom were affiliated with Stanford. Special thanks to Evie, our new Sharp Park site captain Nick, Sydney, Sam, and Calypso who all helped the cleanup run smoothly.
PBC naturalist, Julie Walters, shared interesting facts about the local pelican population and was joined by Nicole, our new naturalist-in-training. It looked like striped bass and perch season was in full swing — there were lots of folks fishing along the beach.
Among our more notable finds were a large broken table, thick netting and rope, and two fully intact snake skins, which we left behind on the beach.
- 53 volunteers
- 52 pounds of landfill trash
- 7 pounds of recyclables
- 10 pounds of green waste
- 1,362 cigarette filters

Linda Mar Beach Cleanup
Highlights: It’s important to preface the fact that Linda Mar has been cleaned up roughly once per week for the last several weeks. It’s amazing how quickly trash accumulates.
Volunteers found a wide variety of trash, most of it the usual suspects you would expect. There was more trash on the beach itself than I was expecting, but groups also went to the San Pedro point shopping areas, the Safeway shopping area, and the community center parking lots. That bench is one that has been sitting out there for a long time, often getting swept away by the waves and periodically hauled back ashore.
Thanks to our awesome leadership, including Lauren and Bill providing educational information, as well as Robin, Nick, Sarah, and our wonderful Pelican Squad teens.
- 61 volunteers
- 60 pounds of landfill trash
- 1 pound of recyclables
- 634 cigarette filters
Mussel Rock Habitat Restoration
Highlights: Many thanks to our hardworking volunteers, including a group from the California Conservation Corps based in Fairfield, who watered and weeded the Native Plant Coastal Garden at Mussel Rock. Daly City Department of Public Works very kindly provided bark for mulch and a water tank holding approximately 300 gallons. The newest plants, planted in mid-February 2025, are thriving. Considering that the plants are watered only once a month, receive full sun, and are exposed to high winds and salt air, these plants are tough and beautiful and provide habitat and food for local wildlife.
Linda Mar Habitat Restoration
Highlights: A small-and-mighty crew completed many focused and nuanced tasks during this month’s habitat restoration. Together, they watered young native plants, removed a small Cypress tree, and pulled various invasive plants, including radish, oxtongue, and fennel. The sun was shining, the humpback whales were out, and some pelicans flew by!
- 7 volunteers
- 20 pounds of landfill trash
- 85 pounds of green waste (weeds)
- 20 square yards mulched
Surfer’s Beach/Harbor Cleanup
Highlights: Despite the overcast skies, our volunteers still came out to clean the beach areas and had a great time. It was an incredibly low tide with clam diggers everywhere. PBC naturalist, Natalie, was back with her “lobster” dog Cleo. And it was Nathan’s last day as a Teen Site Captain before he heads to Santa Barbara for college. We will miss you, Nathan!
- 47 volunteers
- 85 pounds of landfill trash
- 21 pounds of recyclables
- 604 cigarette filters
Calera Creek Habitat Restoration
Highlights: Members of The Friends of Calera Creek, the Pacific Beach Coalition, and six additional volunteers joined Calera Creek’s quarterly habitat restoration. The group worked together to remove piles of wild radish and hemlock and a small amount of poison oak with extreme caution, water native plants, and addressed invasive plants near the stream, including radish, hemlock, cape ivy, and curly dock. Halfway through the event, a kind neighbor offered freshly made banana-nut muffins.
