Annual Coastal Cleanup Day

Each year in September, Earth Heroes of all ages take action during California Coastal Cleanup Day. Since 2005, more than 36,000 pounds of debris have been removed from the San Mateo County coastline by more than 9,500 volunteers.
The Pacific Beach Coalition has been hosting this annual statewide cleanup since 1998, which is held on the same day as The Ocean Conservancy’s International Coastal Cleanup Day, one of the largest volunteer events around the world. We coordinate these cleanups and habitat restoration opportunities at the local level along the San Mateo County coast. All these group efforts are part of our field programs in partnership with the California Coastal Commission and San Mateo Countywide Pollution Prevention Program.
The Official Date for Coastal Cleanup Day 2025 is September 20th. Registration will open soon.
Let’s all make trash extinct! Join us to pick up and clear away debris collecting along our beaches, parks, shoreline, creeks, parking lots, and neighborhood streets. Register online in advance to make check-in quick and easy. It also helps us know how many people to expect at each location.

Who can participate in CA Coastal Cleanup Day?
We welcome Earth Heroes of all ages and group sizes.
Where will cleanups take place?
Sites include our monthly Adopt-A-Beach sites as well as “hot spots” in Pacifica and along the coastline. You can also register to Adopt-A-Spot or do a Street to Beach cleanup.
What should I bring to the Coastal Cleanup Day event?
Gloves and buckets will be provided on a first-come, first-serve basis. We encourage you to bring gloves, a bucket, and a trash picker. Wear layers. Drink water from a reusable water bottle. Bring sunscreen and a hat.
Log your results to be counted toward this year’s final results.
Track your trash with the Clean Swell app. Be sure to put Pacific Beach Coalition or PBC as your group so that the California Coastal Commission will also be able to track the trash you pick up.
