July 2025 Site Reports

July 2025 site reports

Summer is here — even though it doesn’t necessarily look or feel like it on the coast. With the summer months comes more visitors to our beaches and even more trash that needs to be intercepted before it ends up in the ocean.

In addition to our regularly scheduled events, we also supported the City of Pacifica during their post-July 4th fireworks cleanup. Volunteers from all over brought their enthusiasm and love for the environment to our cleanup and habitat restoration sites this month.

Check out the results from some of our July 2025 events.

Thornton Vista Habitat Restoration

Highlights: The group cleared invasive ice plant and put down bark mulch to get a head start in preparing for new plantings later this fall once the rains come.

  • 12 volunteers
  • 500 pounds of green waste (weeds)
  • 200 gallons of water (courtesy of Daly City Public Works)
  • 100 square feet of mulch

Linda Mar Beach Cleanup

Highlights:  There were lots of great volunteers and a wonderful crew leading the event. Plus, Julie led an engaging naturalist presentation, and Bill checked in on San Pedro Creek. Surfrider was out there, and we had a very pleasant time working together. We found lots of trash, including more firework debris, a road flare in some drainage, a heavy bag of trash on the Rockaway Trail.

  • 67 volunteers
  • 80 pounds of landfill trash
  • 6 pounds of recyclables
  • 862 cigarette filters

Mussel Rock Habitat Restoration

Highlights: PBC, in conjunction with Myrna Faulds of Green Kids Gardens, and Susan Mullaney of the Yerba Buena Chapter of the California Native Plant Society (CNPS), sponsored a habitat restoration activity at Mussel Rock Park in Daly City.  This monthly event is held at the same time as our monthly park/beach clean-up at Mussel Rock.

We’ve established, with Nick Crescenzi’s guidance, a native plant demonstration garden, and have worked to remove invasive plants and put in locally native plants as well as improving the aesthetics of the areas in which we are working.

  • 7 volunteers
  • 1,000 pounds of landfill trash
  • 8 pounds of recyclables
  • 500 cigarette filters

Surfer’s/Harbor Beach Cleanup

Highlights: The harbor is being dredged for the next couple of months so there was machinery on site but no workers on the weekends. It was Maggie’s last beach cleanup before she goes off to college. We welcomed two new Teen Site Captains Meena and Cameron. Natalie was back as our naturalist with her “lobster” dog Cleo.
