“The Cigarette Surfboard” is a documentary featuring cigarette butts and surfing to build ocean mindfulness and stewardship.
From the filmmakers: “Small decisions and actions, like littering a cigarette butt, cumulatively can have a large impact, for better or for worse. This immersive documentary provides viewers an up close experience of the ocean through surfers’ eyes, to amplify a message of urgency and possibility regarding the ocean’s wellbeing. As our ocean faces mounting threats, and surfing continues to grow, we as surfers have a responsibility to protect it.”
Many impassioned folks, who were behind this project and inspired by this project, helped to pass the first-of-its-kind policy regarding the ban of cigarette sales. On October 8th, 2024, the Santa Cruz County Board of Supervisors voted unanimously to pass an ordinance banning the sale of single-use cigarette filters. The City of Santa Cruz and the City of Capitola passed similar legislation in 2025, and all three ordinances will go into effect in 2027.
The passing of this ordinance may help pave the way for other counties to do the same. We remain hopeful that San Mateo County, where we host our monthly cleanup and habitat restoration events, will follow suit in the future.
To date, Pacific Beach Coalition volunteers have collected and recycled a staggering 2.3 million cigarette butts since 2014. We’re so inspired by “The Cigarette Surfboard” and hope you enjoy the film.
